I can recall roadblocks and mountains along my journey that caused my heart to race and abruptly stopped me in my path. Before I learned the power of my breath, they left me aimlessly circling and unable to map a detour. Each perceived obstacle would precipitate a tailspin. When I discovered what was there all along, the dynamic capacity of my breath, I was no longer easily distressed by situations. Instead, I could quickly regain perspective and decide how I allowed life to affect me.
From moment to moment, most of us are driven by our emotions. And, we are at the mercy of what each moment brings. Yes, it is difficult to focus on your breath when faced with real life stress. This is one of the reasons, intentional breathing must be a daily practice. Only then will it be accessible and effective when you most need it. Bringing awareness to your breath helps to create physical, spiritual and emotional balance that lets you be the calm in your storms.
Who would have imagined that the natural process of breathing has the ability to improve your health and help you to find clarity? Conscious breathing connects you to your core. It directs your energy to a haven of peace where you can gain insight before reacting. Your breath is a valuable pause which creates brief interludes to reestablish control.
Using your breath solely to deliver oxygen, minimizes its incredible healing and restorative powers. Receive its full goodness. Repurpose your breathing to reduce stress, restore balance, increase energy, be happier and improve your health. Relax and take a deep breath. You may be only a few short breaths away from your best life.
Practicing intentional breathing daily will activate your breath as your go-to tool in times of high stress. It is a portable tool that puts you back in charge. Just inhale and exhale your way to the best version of you. I recommend Dr. Andrew Weil’s 4-7-8 breathing technique as a starting point.
